Tayo Amusan: The Quiet Architect of Nigeria’s Modern Retail Revolution

Some businessmen build reputations through visibility. Tayo Amusan built his through infrastructure that outlasted the noise around it.

Born in Ogun State in 1957 and trained in Business Administration in Atlanta, Amusan founded Persianas Group in 1990. Nearly a decade and a half later, in 2004, he opened The Palms Shopping Mall in Lekki, Lagos, a 45,000 square metre development housing 69 stores. It became Nigeria’s first international-standard mall, changing how Lagosians shopped almost overnight.

He didn’t stop there. Persianas went on to build five more malls in Ibadan, Kwara, Enugu, Ota and Abuja, replicating the model across the country.

Central to that model was Shoprite, which Amusan secured as anchor tenant across his malls starting in 2005. The South African retailer’s presence sustained foot traffic for dozens of smaller retailers built around it.

When Shoprite Holdings decided to exit Nigeria, Amusan stepped in again. Through Ketron Investment Limited, he fully acquired Shoprite Nigeria in June 2021, converting its 25 outlets into a franchise model and later injecting N3.5 billion to revive underperforming stores.

His retail ambitions extended into fashion too. Alongside his wife Ayo Amusan, who runs Persianas Retail Limited, he brought international brands including Hugo Boss, Puma, Lacoste and Max into Nigeria as standalone franchise stores, introducing a level of pricing discipline the market hadn’t seen before.

The scale of his execution has attracted serious international backing. His retail projects have helped unlock up to $124 million in funding commitments from global financial institutions, including the International Finance Corporation.

His ambitions haven’t stopped at retail. In 2024, a consortium led by Amusan announced plans for a 12,000-capacity sports and entertainment arena in Lagos, extending his influence from shopping habits into how the city experiences live events.

Now 69, Amusan also chairs the board of Resourcery Limited, adding another layer to a career built less on headlines and more on structures that quietly became impossible to avoid.
