Adaora Umeoji Emerges Among Nigeria’s Wealthiest Female Bankers

Group Managing Director/CEO Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON.
Adaora Umeoji’s stake in Zenith Bank has climbed to roughly N35.9 billion, about $27 million, placing her among Nigeria’s wealthiest female banking executives. The jump reflects both her 285 million-plus shares and the bank’s rising share price.
At Zenith Bank’s closing price of N125.90, her holding of 285,096,933 shares now carries a market value far above the roughly $21 million recorded in April 2026. The increase traces directly to the stock’s performance rather than any new share purchase.
Her path to this point runs through nearly three decades at the bank. Umeoji joined Zenith in 1998 as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and worked her way up steadily. She joined the Board of Directors in 2012 and spent almost eight years, from 2016 to 2024, as Deputy Managing Director.
Even before her most recent stock accumulation, her direct and indirect shareholding stood at over N4.32 billion, evidence that her wealth was built well before she became CEO. She has also shown a habit of reinvesting, recently spending N3.3 billion to buy an additional 68.8 million shares on the floor of the Nigerian Exchange.
In June 2024, she became Zenith Bank’s first female Group Managing Director and CEO, a milestone in an industry where women remain underrepresented at the top. That appointment came with a significant pay jump too. In 2024, she emerged as Nigeria’s highest-paid banking executive, earning about N874 million, roughly N72 million a month.
Her current standing therefore reflects two decades of salary growth and share accumulation, compounded by a leadership role at one of Nigeria’s most valuable financial institutions. As Zenith’s share price moves, so will the value of her stake, but for now, the $27 million milestone marks a rare convergence of decades of banking experience and substantial equity ownership.
