Ihetu Calls for Pragmatic Energy Transition

Dr. Godswill S. Ihetu has called for a pragmatic approach to the global energy transition, stressing the need for developing countries to pursue cleaner energy while taking account of the need for increased access to reliable electricity in their pursuit for economic development.

The call came during the public presentation of his book, “Quest for Green”, hosted by publisher Kàwé, at Alliance Française Lagos on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The gathering brought together energy stakeholders, policymakers and environmental advocates for discussions on climate action and sustainable development.

The presentation placed emphasis on climate literacy and the need to translate concern about climate change into practical policy and action, particularly in developing economies navigating energy security, affordability and environmental sustainability.

In his address, Ihetu said that expanding clean energy sources remained important, but argued that individual countries should adopt realistic transition pathways.

He identified natural gas as an important bridging energy source alongside renewable energy sources, as nations pursue lower-carbon energy sources.

Ihetu also said that writing the book was inspired in part by public policy discussions on sustainability with Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, over a number of years.

He framed climate change as a challenge that should be addressed through deliberate actions by governments, businesses and individuals.“Climate change is not an unavoidable catastrophe if governments, businesses, and individuals take deliberate, structured actions today.”

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili who was the book reviewer, spoke on the connection between environmental sustainability and governance reform, while Olamide Fagbuji, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology, outlined the federal government’s strategies for incorporating green technologies into Nigeria’s economic planning.

Otti was the chief presenter of the book, while Dr. Uduimo Itsueli was chairman of the event.

The programme culminated in the formal unveiling of the book “Quest for Green”, followed by an executive networking session.
