2nd NSSF/WAMUFAT Sports Camp Ends with Excitement in Ogun

Excitement filled the historic rural community of Joga-Orile in Yewaland, Ogun State, as the second edition of the WAMUFAT/Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) Annual Sports Fiesta came to a close at the Agroterra Sport Complex after five days of intensive sporting activities, mentorship, and youth development.

Young athletes from six states across Nigeria’s South-West converged on the quiet town, ranging from primary school pupils to secondary school teenagers. Over 300 participants, aged between 6 and 16, enjoyed professional coaching and exposure in football, athletics, chess, netball, golf, lawn tennis, and ayo. Beyond competition, the programme integrated structured leadership, mentorship, and educational support sessions designed to foster holistic growth.

At the opening ceremony, NSSF President, Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to grassroots talent discovery. “The Nigeria School Sport Federation remains committed to collaborating with organizations and individuals who share our vision of developing school sports and empowering the next generation of champions,” she said. She also urged government institutions and private-sector investors to support initiatives that combine sports with education, stressing the importance of sustainable opportunities for young athletes.

Founder of WAMUFAT, Mrs. Fatimo Muhammed, pledged to sustain the camp as a permanent fixture in the region’s sporting calendar, calling on Nigerians—especially former athletes in the diaspora—to support grassroots sports development nationwide.

Chairman of Agroterra Resort, Abdulrasheed Afonja, echoed this sentiment, affirming that hosting the camp would remain a priority as long as it continues to focus on empowering young people.

The fiesta attracted dignitaries including His Royal Majesty Oba Prof. Saka Adeola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, and Dr. Lukmon Kiadese, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education.

The five-day programme culminated in a lively Community Race Day and an awards ceremony, where outstanding participants were honoured with certificates and cash prizes.

The successful conclusion of this second edition underscores the growing importance of grassroots sports initiatives in discovering, nurturing, and empowering young athletes, while strengthening the vital link between sports, education, and community development.
