Opeyemi Bamidele’s Inspiring Journey at 63

Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele turned 63 on July 29, and the occasion invited more than a routine birthday acknowledgement. The Senate Majority Leader of the 10th National Assembly has built a public life long enough and consistent enough to be examined seriously.

He began in the trenches. As a student, Bamidele led the National Association of Nigerian Students and was arrested multiple times by military authorities during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles. He has remained in the same progressive political family, from AD through AC, ACN, and into APC, without the ideological drift that has defined so many of his contemporaries.

That consistency would mean little without the rest of the record. On June 1, 2018, an assassination attempt in Ado-Ekiti left bullets lodged in his abdomen. He survived, returned to politics, and by most accounts never pursued retribution against those responsible. Colleagues have cited that response as the clearest window into who he actually is.

In the 10th Senate, he has served as the chief floor manager for executive legislation, directing the passage or amendment of over 108 laws since 2023. He helped steer the Student Loan Act and the Tax Reform Bills through a chamber that required patience and persuasion rather than force. Senate stability during this period is partly attributed to his temperament.

His relationship with President Bola Tinubu dates back to 1992, when he served as an aide. That loyalty, sustained through years when Tinubu’s political standing was uncertain, is viewed less as opportunism and more as principle.

The constituency record fills in the rest: more than 50 roads and 12 mini-stadiums across Ekiti Central, ICU facilities at five hospitals, thousands of solar streetlights, and the establishment of FUTES-Iyin Ekiti with federal funding secured through his legislative efforts.

He holds both the Nigerian and New York Bar certifications, was made a Life Bencher in 2025, and carries the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger.
