Celebrating Seyi Vodi’s Extraordinary Journey at 51
When is a stumble not a fall? Simple, when it is simply a redirection in disguise. Seyi Adekunle, known across Nigeria as Seyi Vodi, is proof of that old wisdom, having built an empire from a career path he never planned to take.
He studied Geology at the University of Maiduguri, but destiny had other plans. After failing a bank employment test years ago, a setback that would have discouraged many, he found himself drawn instead toward tailoring during his NYSC service in Akwa Ibom State.
Seyi Vodi’s earliest jobs were humble. He sewed shirts and boxer shorts for fellow corps members, small commissions that quietly became the first threads of what is now the Vodi Group, a full conglomerate built around fashion and lifestyle.
Today, the group spans far beyond bespoke suits. It includes Vodi Kleen, a professional cleaning service; the Vodi Training Institute, an academy that has empowered thousands of youths; Vodi Debbo for women’s fashion; and Vodi Shoes for footwear manufacturing.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who built their names in Lagos’s crowded fashion scene, Seyi Vodi planted his flag in Abuja. That decision positioned him as the tailor of choice for the nation’s political elite, from vice presidents to top government officials.
He recently unveiled a multibillion-naira corporate headquarters in the capital, an industrial-scale complex that few designers in the country can claim, indicating an approach to fashion that looks more like manufacturing than boutique craftsmanship.
While others in his bracket are celebrated primarily as creative talents, Seyi Vodi has cultivated a different identity: that of a business strategist who happens to design suits, and frequently speaks on wealth creation and mentors young entrepreneurs.
At 51, the man who once failed a bank test now dresses the very people who might once have hired him. His story is less about fashion and more about what happens when a closed door quietly opens another one.
