Lagos Youths to Represent Nigeria at International Festival in UK
The Official Lagos Youth Cultural Delegation, coordinated by Peekok YouthARTS Initiatives (PYI) is set to represent Nigeria at the prestigious FUSE International Festival 2026 in Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom, with a multidisciplinary performance production titled “ÀJỌ – The Sojourn,” and supported by the Lagos State Government.
According to Mr Oyetunji Olu Akinloye, Artistic Director, Peekok YouthARTS Initiatives “The delegation, which is supported by the Lagos State Government, comprise talented young artists, performers, cultural practitioners, and creative educators from Lagos State who will showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, artistic excellence, and youthful creativity before an international audience.”
Scheduled for presentation on 26 June 2026, “ÀJ – The Sojourn” is a contemporary performance that combines theatre, dance, music, rhythm, movement, and visual storytelling to explore themes of migration, identity, resilience, cultural belonging, and hope.
Akinloye stated that “The production draws inspiration from the journeys and experiences of young people navigating an increasingly interconnected world while remaining rooted in their cultural heritage.”
He disclosed that “The participation of the delegation has been made possible through the support of the Lagos State Government, whose commitment to youth development, cultural promotion, and international creative engagement continues to provide opportunities for young people to excel on the global stage.”
The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende and other relevant government stakeholders have expressed support for the project as part of ongoing efforts to promote Lagos as a centre of creativity, innovation, and cultural excellence.
He added that “The initiative aligns with the State Government’s vision of empowering young people through arts, culture, education, and international exposure.”
FUSE International Festival, presented annually by the UK-based organisation Creative Youth, is one of the world’s leading international festivals for emerging artists.
The festival brings together young creatives from across the globe to share ideas, present original works, and foster intercultural understanding through artistic expression.
Akinloye noted the project provides a valuable platform for young Nigerian artists to engage with their international counterparts while serving as ambassadors of Lagos State and Nigeria.
“ÀJỌ – The Sojourn reflects the creativity, resilience, and aspirations of young people.We are grateful for the support of the Lagos State Government in making this international cultural exchange possible.
This opportunity allows our young artists to share authentic Nigerian stories while building meaningful connections with audiences and artists from around the world,” he stated.
The delegation’s participation is expected to strengthen international cultural partnerships, promote positive representation of Nigerian youth, and showcase the vibrant creative ecosystem of Lagos State to global audiences.
“As preparations for the festival continue, the Lagos State Government, Peekok YouthARTS Initiatives, participating schools, parents, and community stakeholders remain committed to ensuring a successful representation of Lagos and Nigeria at this important international event,” he added.
