GAHTO Seeks Stronger Collaboration with Communities to Curb Trafficking Across Africa

The Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation has called for stronger collaboration with communities to curb human trafficking across Africa.

They made the call at a press conference announcing the rescue of seven Nigerian women in Lagos, recently. According to the President of GAHTO, Mr. Prosper Michael, increasing cases of labour exploitation and trafficking across the continent has necessitated the need for coordinated efforts to decisively address these crimes.

While calling on families and communities to remain vigilant, they urged members of the public, particularly young women seeking opportunities abroad, to thoroughly verify job offers before embarking on any journey.

According to him, the seven recently rescued Nigerian women were trafficked to Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire under false pretence.

The survivors revealed that dozens of young Nigerian women were allegedly working under horrible conditions in various locations across the continent.

He also advised members of the public report suspicious recruitment activities to relevant authorities promising that GAHTO “will forward the names of those involved to the appropriate security agencies, so they can be placed on watchlists and arrested.”
