Transforming Wig Construction Through Innovation and Education

By Ugo Aliogo

Adanma Awolo is a Nigerian wig constructor, educator, and founder of BRS Wig Academy, known for her commitment to technical wig construction education and for advocating innovative approaches to wig construction among wig makers locally and internationally. Since entering the hair industry in 2012 and specializing in wig construction from 2017, she has dedicated her career to helping aspiring wig makers develop technical competence through hands-on learning, mentorship, and practical training.

In an industry where precision and structure are essential to achieving professional results, innovation often begins with identifying challenges that many people have come to accept as part of the process. For Adanma, one such challenge became the starting point of a journey that would influence her approach to wig construction, education, and innovation.

For years, she worked extensively with traditional canvas wig blocks while producing custom wigs and training aspiring wig makers through one-on-one classes and small group workshops. Although canvas blocks were widely used across the industry, she repeatedly observed a common challenge among students. Many struggled to accurately identify the front and back of the block, often leading to positioning errors that affected the structure, balance, and overall quality of the finished wig.

As an educator passionate about technical excellence, Adanma believed there was an opportunity to improve the learning experience for aspiring wig makers. Through years of teaching and mentoring, she became increasingly interested in methods and tools that could simplify the construction process while improving precision and consistency.

In June 2024, that search led her to the polymer wig block. As an early adopter within Nigeria’s wig-making community, Adanma immediately recognized its potential to improve both technical training and production outcomes.

Unlike traditional canvas blocks, the polymer wig block offered a more defined and structured shape that provided clearer orientation during wig construction. Its sculpted design made it easier to identify the front and back of the block, reducing common positioning errors and helping wig makers achieve greater consistency in construction. To Adanma, it represented more than a new tool; it was a practical innovation capable of improving both technical training and production standards.

After incorporating the polymer wig block into her professional practice, she began sharing her experiences through demonstrations, educational content, and professional discussions within the wig-making community. Many quickly recognized the advantages it offered in terms of structure, consistency, and ease of use.

The response was immediate. Adanma received numerous enquiries from aspiring and professional wig makers interested in learning more about the innovation. Demand grew rapidly, leading to the sale of her initial stock and the placement of pre-orders for subsequent shipments. Beyond Nigeria, she supplied polymer wig blocks to wig makers in Ghana and the United Kingdom, while also receiving enquiries from professionals in the United States, South Africa and Cotonou. Her demonstrations, educational content and professional discussions helped generate growing interest in the innovation across multiple countries.

The most noticeable improvement she observed was consistency. The polymer wig block made it easier to correctly position and construct wigs, resulting in better balance, alignment and more uniform production quality. Whether producing 10 wigs or 100 wigs, the quality of production remained consistent. She observed similar improvements in the work produced by her students, whose wigs demonstrated greater consistency in structure and overall quality.

What began as a personal discovery gradually evolved into a broader conversation about precision, professionalism, and innovation within technical wig construction. The growing interest from wig makers across multiple countries reinforced Adanma’s belief that practical innovations can play a significant role in raising standards within the industry when supported by education, demonstration, and real world results.

Before discovering the polymer wig block, Adanma had already established herself as an educator through her Wigology Workshops, hands-on training programmes focused on technical wig construction and precision sewing techniques. Through a combination of small group workshops and personalized one-on-one training sessions, she helped aspiring wig makers build the practical skills, discipline, and confidence required to produce high quality custom wigs.

Beyond education, Adanma has also built relationships with hair brands and suppliers across Vietnam, the Philippines, and China, giving her valuable exposure to international industry practices and developments. These experiences have contributed to her broader understanding of innovation within the global hair and beauty industry while strengthening her commitment to raising standards within her local community.

Today, Adanma continues to advocate for technical excellence within the wig industry through education, mentorship, and the promotion of innovative approaches to wig construction. Her work reflects a belief that continuous learning, precision and openness to innovation are essential to the growth and professionalization of custom wig construction.

For Adanma, the story of the polymer wig block is ultimately about more than a construction tool. It is a story about recognizing a challenge, embracing innovation and sharing practical solutions that improve professional standards. Through education, mentorship, industry engagement and advocacy for innovative construction methods, she continues to contribute to conversations around precision, consistency and technical excellence within the wig industry.
