‘Sundry Market Boosting Nigerian Economy, Engaged 5,000 Staff in 10yrs’

The Sundry Markets Limited (SML), the operator of the popular Market Square supermarket chain, has said that it has in the past 10 years engaged over 5,000 Nigerian in meaningful jobs within the country.

Sundry Markets, which was recently recognised as one of Africa’s fastest-growing companies said it achievements cut across 16 States of the nation.

Speaking during an event to mark the 10th Anniversary of Sundry Markets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the weekend, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SML, Mr. Ebele Enunwa, disclosed that the company has contributed hugely in the economy of the country.

Enunwa who expressed excitement that the investment that started in Yanagoa, Bayelsa State, 10 years later has expanded to 41 branches across cities of the 16 States 

He said “We started off this business 10 years ago with nothing. Today we have 40 stores across the country and we are now the single largest grocery retail chain in Nigeria. And that’s a testament to the hard work of thousands of people who come to work every day at our locations and who are focused on satisfying the customer and exceeding the customer’s expectations.”

Speaking on challenges in the past years, Enunwa stressed, “I don’t think anybody ever had it easy, to be honest. I don’t think anybody, any business can say they’ve had it easy. Life is fraught with challenges. And how you tackle those challenges is what makes you stand up and rise or fall down and die.”

Also speaking on how the government can strengthen the value chain, Chairman of SML, Charles Odita noted the need for steady power supply, security, infrastructure and healthy environment.

Odita said “Today, we have grown, spread across the country, over 16 states, over 41 branches. We can say, we have grown to become the largest modern retail business in Nigeria.”

On his part, Executive Director, Sundry Foods Limited, Nnamdi Opara, praised the SML Chief Executive for the vision birthed and the collective commitment that has led to the years of success of the Sundry Markets.
