The Nigerian film industry, currently producing thousands of titles annually, is entering what industry insiders are calling its “Dark Age” of distribution. Despite massive global demand, filmmakers are seeing their margins decimated by traditional cinema cuts, tax complexities, and flat-fee streaming deals that fail to reward success.
Today, eTheater is announcing a structural revolution: the Electronic Theater™ (eTheater). A new category of digital distribution, eTheater is designed to give filmmakers a direct-to-audience pipeline, bypassing the traditional gatekeepers that have historically controlled the power and the profits of African cinema.
“Distribution is neutral; whoever controls it controls power,” says the CEO of eTheater. “Filmmakers take the biggest risk and currently own the least. That imbalance is what I am fixing. eTheater exists because creators shouldn’t have to surrender ownership or settle for the wrong audience just to reach a screen.”
The Electronic Box Office (eBox Office): Mimicking Cinema, Eliminating Geography
Unlike traditional streaming platforms that pay a fixed license fee regardless of a film’s performance, eTheater operates on a VTicks (Virtual Tickets) model. This mimics the traditional theater experience online but removes the physical barriers of distance, fixed show times, and limited running windows.
Key disruptions include:
- Total Rights Retention: Unlike traditional distribution deals that require “secret handshakes” and the surrender of intellectual property, eTheater ensures the filmmaker retains 100% of their rights. There is no selling out; creators maintain total control over their work.
- The 80% Rule: While traditional cinemas often take a 50% cut before taxes and expenses, eTheater ensures filmmakers retain 80%+ of their revenue.
- Scale Without Borders: By eliminating geographic barriers, a filmmaker can sell to an audience in London, Lagos, Melbourne, and New York simultaneously without the cost of physical distribution or the interference of regional middlemen.
- Revenue Scalability: No fixed fees or “flat-check” licensing. Revenue scales with demand—if a film performs, the filmmaker makes money proportional to that success.
- Data Sovereignty: Unlike current streaming platforms that hoard viewer data, eTheater empowers creators with direct access to their audience demographics, allowing for real-time scaling and marketing.
