Breaking Barriers: Advancing Women’s Careers in Technology
Adeola R Olaniyi
The technology industry continues to stand out as one of the most rewarding and transformative career paths in today’s world. For women seeking growth, innovation, financial independence, and global opportunities, a career in tech offers limitless possibilities. From business and sales to cybersecurity, software development, project management, cloud computing, and data analytics, the tech ecosystem offers diverse career paths for everyone, regardless of educational and professional backgrounds.
One of the biggest misconceptions about the technology industry is the belief that only individuals with a degree in Computer Science can succeed in tech. It’s even harder for women who might think they need to have it all, including the experience, before applying for a tech role. While technical education and experience can be an advantage, the modern tech environment has evolved far beyond that narrative. Today, passion, curiosity, adaptability, and the willingness to continuously learn are some of the most valuable qualities required to thrive in the industry.
Although predominantly dominated by males, Technology is no longer restricted to a specific gender alone. There are countless opportunities for all individuals, including women, with strengths in communication, business development, customer success, marketing, operations, finance, and leadership. The industry welcomes people who are eager to solve problems, can create impact, are attentive, and willing to grow.
My personal journey reflects this reality. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Public and International Affairs. However, my passion for technology and business became the foundation for my career transition into tech. Opportunity met preparation when I applied for the Microsoft4Afrika internship program, where I emerged among the top 100 candidates selected from over 3,000 applicants.
Over the years, I have worked with professionals from different academic disciplines who have built successful careers in technology. I have also seen individuals with strong technical degrees struggle because their passion did not align with the field. This further proves that success in tech is not determined solely by academic qualifications, but by commitment, resilience, continuous development, and the ability to adapt.
For women aspiring to build a successful career in technology, here are some important steps to consider:
- Build a Strong Educational Foundation: A university degree remains valuable, regardless of discipline. Many transferable skills gained through higher education can be applied successfully in tech careers.
- Identify Your Tech Niche: Technology offers both technical and non-technical career opportunities. Choose a path that aligns with your strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Whether it is Security Analyst, product management, cloud computing, sales, or digital transformation, software development, DevOps, etc, there is room for everyone.
- Start with Entry-Level Opportunities: Internships, graduate trainee programs, volunteer roles, and entry-level positions are excellent ways to gain practical exposure and industry experience.
- Invest in Continuous Learning: Professional certifications, online courses, technical training, and soft skills development are essential in staying competitive and relevant in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
- Find Mentors and Role Models: Mentorship provides guidance, encouragement, industry insight, and opportunities for growth. Learning from experienced professionals can accelerate career advancement significantly.
- Show Up with Excellence: Consistency, professionalism, confidence, and a positive attitude can distinguish you in any workplace. Always strive to deliver value and exceed expectations.
- Learn, Unlearn, and Relearn: Technology evolves rapidly. Staying adaptable and open to learning new skills is critical for long-term success.
- Stay Passionate and Relevant: Passion fuels resilience. Continue developing yourself, embracing innovation, and contributing meaningfully to your organization and industry.
- Keep Growing: Growth is a continuous journey. Never limit your potential. The opportunities within the technology industry are endless for women who are willing to take bold steps and remain committed to their goals.
Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, more women are shaping the future of technology across Africa and globally. The industry needs more female voices, innovators, leaders, and changemakers at the decision-making table. Regardless of your background, the tech industry is open to anyone willing to learn, adapt, and grow.
Your technology journey may begin with curiosity, but with persistence and purpose, it can lead to extraordinary impact and success. #IWD #GIVETOGAIN #IWD2026 #March2026
