The political profile of Otunba Segun Showunmi, the former spokesperson to Alhaji Abubakar Atiku during the 2023 Presidential election, yesterday enjoyed the support of the Ogun State chapter of the Action Alliance (AA), which endorsed him as its gubernatorial candidate in 2027.
The AA’s endorsement of Showunmi, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and convener of a political movement, The Alternative, was his fourth endorsement to be done by political parties in the state.
Three other political parties, Labour Party (LP), Nigeria Democratic Party (NDP) and African Democratic Party (ADP) had earlier wooed the politician to be their governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
The endorsement of Showunmi, was done during a visit of the party’s executive and some members led by AA State Chairman, Prof. Olukunle Adebola, paid him a visit in his Ibara, Abeokuta GRA residence.
The party executive members, were supported by the National Financial Secretary of the party, Prof. Awofala Awoniyi, who extolled the virtues of Showunmi as a fearless, outspoken and consistent person.
In his address, the AA Chairman said members of the party had been watching political activities of Showunmi and had found him worthy of the party’s ticket.
He said they were ready to work with him rescue Ogun State from maladministration as they had found out that Showunmi truly had what it takes to govern the state effectively.
The position of the chairman, was echoed by the National Financial Secretary, who said politics is serious business, and members must protect their interests.
Awofala, enjoined AA members to mobilise themselves and their families to ensure effective participation.
He said, “What we have today is not accidental. Leadership is not by chance. If we believe in a candidate, we must commit fully.
“The margin between winners and losers can be small—sometimes less than 17,000 votes. Organisation and early preparation matter.
“Let us unite, organise, and ensure that in 2027 we congratulate ourselves.”
While accepting the offer as the governorship candidate, Showunmi stressed the need for other political parties to unite to provide credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said the excessive dominance of the ruling party as being done in Nigeria, was making mockery of democracy and does not portray the country well in the comity of nations.
Showunmi said Nigerian politicians are making too much noise and less action towards winning elections.
He said, “You cannot claim to practice democracy and allow a situation where only the ruling party appears on the ballot. There must be a viable political context. And under the existing laws, including the amended Electoral Act, you cannot simply run on an independent candidacy. You must operate within a political party structure.
“That is why my movement is called The Alternative. I did not start it to gain attention—I have always spoken on national issues. I started it to make us reflect on a few fundamental questions.
“What is the point of democracy if you do not participate? Nigerians have reduced democracy to entertainment. Instead of joining political parties, many refuse. They collect their PVCs reluctantly—often just as ID cards.
“Nigeria has one of the loudest political conversations in the world. Everywhere—homes, schools, TV, radio—people discuss politics. Naturally, you would expect such a politically aware population to participate. But they do not.
“We must return to our families and communities and tell ourselves the truth: it is irresponsible to complain constantly while refusing to participate. Join parties. Vote. Engage.”
