Uptown the Maskking bags regional honours, eyes national dominance
Masked musician Uptown the Maskking has clinched a prestigious regional honour, signaling what many observers describe as a rising visual revolution in Nigeria’s creative space.
The award, presented by the Niger Delta Advancement Award Body, recognises the artiste’s bold contribution to visual storytelling and identity-building within Nigerian music. Speaking during his acceptance, the masked performer described the recognition as a defining moment in his journey, saying, “The award is a symbol of resilience of our commitment to a visual revolution.”
According to him, the win reflects years of deliberate effort invested in creating a strong visual presence that goes beyond sound. He noted that his success was driven by a carefully curated identity rooted in symbolism, fashion, choreography and regional pride. “It’s about our visual signature, strong symbolic identity, regional pride, hope, coordinated choreography, fashion influence, as well as strategic visibility before award voting,” he explained.
The artiste revealed that his path has not been without challenges. Operating from the Niger Delta, he faced limited industry infrastructure and reduced mainstream media attention, while his signature mask sometimes shifted focus away from his artistry. “Basically, it was about breaking through invisibility while building a unique identity from the Niger Delta,” he said. “The mask is a unique and powerful branding tool, but can also be a barrier, as some audiences focus more on appearance than artistry. This required strong storytelling from me, quality and a clear artistic vision.”
Despite these hurdles, he said he turned adversity into motivation by leveraging social media platforms and investing in high-quality visuals, a move that transformed him from a regional act into a respected visual authority.
Describing the award as more than a trophy, the artiste said it represents a new phase in his career. “For me, the award is more of a positivity shift, building visibility and proving myself as a visual innovator,” he stated. “It becomes a launchpad for me for national dominance, African recognition and broadening my diaspora reach.”
He also expressed gratitude to those who supported his journey, saying, “I would like to thank the Almighty God who is the source of all creativity, my family, the Niger Delta Advancement Award Body, my partners and indeed my lovely fans who have kept faith in me.”
Offering words of encouragement to emerging creatives, the artiste stressed that location should not limit ambition. “You don’t have to be Lagos-based to win big; talent from anywhere can dominate,” he said, urging young artistes to embrace innovation, risk-taking and storytelling.
Reflecting on his acclaimed music video Sky, he likened the production process to an intense sporting performance. “Making the video Sky reminds me that music video making is like choreographing a dance while playing a game of football,” he noted, adding that the award celebrates precision, creativity and passion.
The recognition, industry watchers say, underscores the growing influence of Niger Delta creatives and reinforces the message that strategic creativity, cultural identity and regional pride can compete—and triumph—on the national stage.
