Angela Okorie Faces Cyber-stalking Charges
Ferdinand Ekechukwu
Some months back the Nigeria Police Force had announced disciplinary measures against its officers who were seen wielding firearms while pursuing actress Angela Okorie in a viral video. The video which sparked public outrage appeared to be footage from the set of her movie, ‘Queen of Guns’.
In response to the viral clip, the police, in a statement confirmed efforts to identify the officers involved while it condemned the officers’ conduct in a statement posted on its X page, describing their actions as a clear violation of the professional standards and decorum expected from members of the force.
“Accordingly, necessary administrative processes have been initiated to identify the officers involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the video, while appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the outcome of the review. The Force remains committed to upholding professionalism, discipline, and public trust.”
Although the specific offences of the officers remained unclear, wearing police uniform without proper authorisation constitutes a violation of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy. According to the police, the unauthorised use of police uniforms and other official accoutrements is punishable under Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law.
As at then, the actress neither responded to the police statement nor clarified whether proper authorization was given. Fast-forward to January 26, 2026. So when news broke on Wednesday that Angela was arrested, many had thought it was in connection with the above.
However, it was later confirmed that Angela who has been enmeshed in controversies lately was arrested over charges of criminal defamation and cyber-stalking. Okorie was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday night by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department.
Confirming the news, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said that the actress was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja. She was subsequently charged to court within hours after taken to Abuja and remanded until January 30.
Filmmaker Ajemba Stanley also confirmed that Okorie was charged to court on Wednesday and subsequently remanded. In a series of social media posts, Stanley criticised the process, describing it as an abuse of power. He alleged that Okorie was arrested at midnight Tuesday.
“You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight yesterday, flew her to Abuja as early as 6am, and this morning took her to court, where she was remanded in Suleja prison,” he wrote. “So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep tonight knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison,” Stanley added.
It was gathered and confirmed that the police actually sent an invitation to the defendant on January 16, 2026 to report at the headquarters in relation to the case. However the police was faulted for denying the defendant access to her lawyers before the court’s proceedings.
Industry sources suggested that Okorie’s arrest maybe linked to a long-running feud online with fellow actress Mercy Johnson. The dispute escalated last year after Okorie made controversial claims about Johnson’s health and accused her of hypocrisy, an allegations that sparked widespread backlash online.
A report shortly after confirmed that Okorie’s case which has been filed since July, 2025, stemmed from a petition by Mercy Johnson’s lawyer, in which sundry allegations were made against Angela and Ifeoma. Having been trolling Mercy for quite some time, the statement stirred widespread reactions.
She was alleged, in the charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/278/2025 to have conspired with one Ifeoma Mbonu (now at large) to commit cyber-stalking and defamation by calling a fellow actress, Mercy Johnson Okojie a blood sucking demon in their posts on their social media platforms of Instagram and Tiktok.
Angela had once during a live Instagram session made some claims about Mercy’s alleged health struggles and her personality. She went on to say that, despite past grievances, she had chosen to let go of the bitterness. “Mercy Johnson not feeling well, and honestly feel for her and want the best for her, and want her to win.”
“And today I have forgiven her. You know these bloggers, they are very crazy. When they see me comment on somebody’s wall, they will just munch it and post, and before you know it will start trending,” she continued. “But the truth is that, tell Mercy to go and apologise to the people she has offended.”
But part of the petition in the case, dated May 14, 2025 reads: “Most alarmingly, in a recent criminal and defamatory publication, Angela Okorie published the following statement via her Instagram page @ realagelaokorie: Blood sucking demon no see blood suck again, E say na slimming tea.
“Except there’s no God, MJ go and beg people you chop their destinies and destroyed their hornes else no peace for the wicked!!! Gospel songs won’t save you. Your heart Is Dark!!!’
“This malicious statement, clearly targeted at our client, was published with the intent to cause irreparable reputational injury, incite hatred, provoke unrest among the public and further harass and emotionally traumatize our client.
“The tone, content, and framing of the publication aim to portray our client as a destructive person, despite her widely known public image as a humanitarian and devout Christian mother.
“The principal suspect, Angela Okorie, has demonstrated a relentless and calculated effort to incite public hatred and threaten public peace by repeatedly using her social media platform for criminal intimidation, false accusations, and criminal defamation.”
