CALL FOR ENTRIES: FA Yuletide Writing Prize Opens Its Inaugural Season to Nigerian Writers

In a season often associated with celebration and reflection, a new literary initiative is inviting Nigerian writers to explore a different, deeper shade of December. The FA Yuletide Writing Prize, now open for its inaugural edition, is calling for bold short stories that examine the theme “Dark Yuletide.”

Launched by writer, editor, and data analyst  Fortune Aganbi, the prize aims to spotlight fresh voices and stories that resonate with the realities of life in Nigeria: whether through folklore, psychological tension, subtle social commentary, or the quiet unease that sometimes accompanies the festive season.

“We’re not looking for clichés,” the organisers say. “We’re looking for stories that feel alive: imaginative, well-crafted, and honest. Stories that capture the season in ways we don’t usually talk about.”

The competition is open to Nigerians aged 18 and above who reside in the country. Entries must be original, unpublished, and submitted anonymously. Writers are invited to craft short stories between 1,000 and 1,500 words, with the freedom to interpret Dark Yuletide through any lens (horror, folklore, speculative fiction, psychological drama, or lived Nigerian experience).

To encourage excellence, the prize offers a remarkable reward structure for an emerging award:

  • ₦250,000 for first place
  • ₦180,000 for the second
  • ₦120,000 for the third
  • ₦50,000 for a special attempt

Winning and shortlisted stories may also be featured on the official website.

Submissions are open from December 2 to December 29, 2025, and will be judged anonymously by a panel made up of literary geniuses committed to fairness, originality, and literary merit. Shortlisted writers may request feedback on their work after the announcement.

For many emerging authors, the FA Yuletide Writing Prize represents more than another contest. It is an encouraging space to take risks, refine craft, and tell the kinds of stories that linger. As the organisers note, “Every writer has a story they haven’t told yet. This prize is an invitation to write it finally.”
