The Labour Party (LP) in Sokoto State has concluded its state congress by electing Yawale Abubakar as the new state chairman.
The event, held at the party’s headquarters, drew delegates from all 23 local government areas, filling the venue in a sea of red‑white‑green flags and hopeful chants.
In a ceremony attended byartyofficials and ocal dignitaries, Abubakar was declared the consensus candidate after a vote that complied with the LP’s constitution.
During his acceptance speech, the newly installed chairman pledged to “sack the All Progressives Congress (APC) misrule” not only in Sokoto State but across the country, framing the LP as the vehicle for change after years of perceived neglect.
He told a cheering crowd that the APC‑led government had “inflicted poverty and insecurity” on the state, citing rising food prices, unemployment, and a surge in banditry that has displaced many farming communities.
Abubakar Alsaimedat,, governors who have recently defected to the APC, accusing them of pursuing “selfish interests” and warning that such moves would not deter the LP’s mission.
The new chairman referenced the party’s electoral successes in 2023, noting that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had made strong showings in Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory.
“If Obi can break the APC’s stronghold in those bastions, we can repeat that streak here in Sokoto State,” he declared, drawing enthusiastic applause from delegates.
He added that the new executive would focus on grassroots mobilisation, policy advocacy, and strengthening the party’s presence in rural areas.
He also announced plans to launch a statewide campaign to highlight what the party describes as the APC’s failures in governance, and to present the LP’s alternative vision.
The new chairman’s speech was punctuated by chants of “LP forever” and the waving of party flags, reflecting the enthusiasm of supporters eager for a political alternative.
The Labour Party’s state congress in Sokoto State marks a significant moment for the opposition, as it seeks to capitalise on public discontent and position itself as a credible challenger in the upcoming electoral cycle.
Alongside Abubakar, the congress elected a full slate of officers including Vice Chairman, Alhaji Saidu Ahmad Mu; Deputy Chairman (North), Mallam Ladan Muham; Deputy Chairman (South‑east), Dr. Ibrahim Lawal Isa; Deputy Chairman (South‑south), Abdullahi Muhamm;d, and Deputy Chairman, Bello Garba Gwadabaw, who were among those sworn in.
Others are Deputy Chairman (female) Hajia Maryam Sani; State Secretary, Hon. Nura Abubakar; Assistant Secretary I, Yusuf Abubakar; Assistant Secretary II, Alhaji Nasiru Aminu; State Financial Secretary, Alhaji Attahiru Abubakar; and State Organising Secretary, Hon. Jamilu Adamu.
Other key positions were filled by State Public Secretary, Abubakar Musa; State Legal Adviser, Misbahu M. Bashir; State Auditor, Saifullahi Bello Sanusi; State Women Leader, Hajia Aisha Mukhtar; Deputy Women Leader (North), Rukayya Muhammad; Deputy Women Leader (South), Hajia Hadiza Atiku, and Deputy Women Leader (East), Hajia Hanatu Buhari.
