Donni Is Ready for Takeoff with Never As Soft Again

Opeyemi, known professionally as Donni, is part of the new generation of artists shaping Nigeria’s sound.

Raised in Olumore, Abeokuta, his music carries a calm confidence that mirrors his background.

He grew up in a home filled with songs. His grandfather wrote hymns, and the family atmosphere was rich with music. As a child, he sang in the choir and often created melodies while doing chores, blending Fuji, Apala, and gospel without realising he was training his ear.

Music became a natural part of his life. What started as quiet curiosity soon turned into passion, and by 2019 he was ready to record. His first single, “Nanama,” introduced him to the world and gave him direction.

The name Donni came after, one he gave himself to represent strength and presence. He says it means “King of the Underworld,” a title that reflects conviction and self-assurance.

His songs draw from experience, and he writes about what he has lived through rather than what he imagines.

Among his songs, “Everyone” stands out as his favourite. He describes it as smooth and relaxing, a reflection of the mood he often wants his listeners to feel. That same sense of ease runs through his upcoming EP, ‘Never As Soft Again (NASA).’

The five-track project documents his growth and emotional shift over the years. The title reflects how life has shaped him, but it also represents elevation and a sense of rising above what once held him back. “I’m not hard, but I’m not as soft as I used to be,” he says.

‘NASA,’ to him, is a symbol of ambition and progress
Recording ‘NASA’ was both demanding and enjoyable. He took his time to make each track sound right, with “Rocket Level” setting the tone for the rest of the project. The songs are built on honesty and rhythm, combining catchy hooks with lyrics that feel familiar. He describes his sound as simple but powerful, the kind that connects easily with people.

As an independent artist, he understands the effort it takes to build a career without backing.

Every step requires patience and focus, qualities he continues to grow into. He hopes to collaborate with artists like Wizkid and Asake, whose music inspires him. With “Never As Soft Again,” Donni steps into a new phase with quiet confidence.
