“Voices of a Rising Continent: Nigerian Podcaster Chimauchem Nwosu Wins Big at SABA Awards in Victoria Falls”

The Southern Africa Broadcasting Association (SABA), a cornerstone of the region’s media landscape since 1993, once again convened the industry’s crème de la crème.

At its 9th gathering in Victoria Falls, held in collaboration with Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) and hosted by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services. This year’s theme, “Content, Connectivity, Collaboration, Africa’s Broadcasting Media in the AI Era,” was timely and unequivocally forward-looking – reckoning with the future.

This event, drawing a global cohort of media practitioners who came together to discuss how AI is revolutionizing Africa’s media ecosystem, culminated in a gala awards ceremony celebrating excellence and unrivalled mastery of African storytelling. From this celebratory fray, one announcement spotlighted Sputnik Africa. One of its popular podcasts, African Currents , clinched the award for Best Local Content Range on Radio .

The program, a multi-niche melting pot of authentic African storytelling, triumphed over formidable contenders from Namibia and South Africa. The coveted award was bestowed upon Sputnik Africa’s correspondent and podcast host, the young, charismatic Nigerian Chimauchem Nwosu, whose voice carries depth and optimism. He complements his professional career with public speaking at international forums and a passion for mentorship. He has become one of Africa’s most promising radio talents. Chimauchem joins a luminous constellation of young African changemakers and trailblazers whose work signals a renaissance in creativity, storytelling, purpose, and global impact. As the African Currents host, he dives deep into the continent’s heartbeat, curating stories that reveal Africa’s ingenuity, struggle, and triumph.

African Currents electrifies audiences, featuring incisive short and long-form dialogues, transforming into a platform so compelling that listeners find it indispensable. The award-winning entry, “Africa’s Medical Ingenuity Transforms Lives and Builds Healthier Futures,” is a testament to its mission. The episode featured African pioneers who are rewriting the global healthcare narrative, offering a glimpse into the continent’s breakthroughs in modern medicine. It highlighted Professor Mashudu Tshifularo, Head of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pretoria, who made global headlines in 2019 by performing the world’s first middle ear transplant using 3D-printed bones, restoring hearing. The episode also featured Professor Anil Madaree and the transformative work of Operation Smile, which provides life-changing reconstructive surgery for children and adults with cleft conditions across South Africa and beyond.

Through episodes like these, Chimauchem Nwosu’s African Currents captures Africa in motion. His guests range from lawmakers and tech innovators to educators and cultural icons, each conversation echoing a belief that Africa’s stories are best told by Africans themselves.

For Sputnik Africa, the award signals more than prestige. It amplifies its reach as a pan-continental multilingual broadcaster reaching audiences in Africa and beyond in English, French, Swahili, and Amharic. Earlier this year, it opened a regional office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and another bureau in Johannesburg, South Africa. Its programs, now aired on partner local stations in several countries, continue to weave the continent’s diverse voices into one powerful narrative.

At Victoria Falls, amid the roar of applause and the mist from the Zambezi, SABA’s mission came full circle, celebrating Africa’s media not just as industry but as a force shaping how the world listens to the continent.
