Hon. Jim Chimezie Okolo Urges Strategic Diplomatic Response to Reframe U.S. Narrative on Nigeria

Hon. Jim Chimezie Okolo, National Coordinator of Nouvelle Perspective, has called on the Nigerian government to initiate a thoughtful and coordinated diplomatic engagement in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

In his statement, President Trump expressed concern over religious freedom in Nigeria, suggesting that the country faces serious challenges in protecting Christian communities. He framed his comments as a call for international attention and support for vulnerable groups. While the remarks have sparked global debate, they reflect a broader concern about human rights that he believes deserves urgent engagement.

Responding with measured diplomacy, Hon. Okolo acknowledged the importance of international dialogue on human rights and religious freedom, but emphasized the need for a more balanced and evidence-based understanding of Nigeria’s complex realities. “I believe President Trump’s concerns stem from a genuine desire to protect lives and uphold justice,” Okolo said. “However, it is equally important that such narratives are informed by comprehensive facts and reflect the efforts Nigeria continues to make in promoting peace and religious tolerance.”

Drawing on his experience in global electoral diplomacy, Hon. Okolo highlighted his leadership role as National Coordinator of Nouvelle Perspective Internationale—a United Nations–affiliated electoral management and observation organization headquartered in Switzerland. Under his guidance, the organization was formally accredited by the U.S. Election Management Body (EMB) to observe the U.S. Presidential Election last year. Following this mission, Hon. Okolo was invited to attend the 47th Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump, where he met with key stakeholders in the Trump administration to discuss electoral reforms and the promotion of good governance in Nigeria.

Building on this international engagement, Hon. Okolo is now urging the Nigerian government to mobilize a delegation of respected statesmen and diplomats—including Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, Babagana Kingibe, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, and Amina Mohammed—to lead a strategic diplomatic outreach. Their mission, he said, should be to engage directly with U.S. institutions, clarify Nigeria’s position, and reaffirm its role as a committed partner in global security and democratic development.

“The government should engage the U.S. Embassy and encourage a constructive reassessment based on shared values and mutual respect,” Okolo stated. “Nigeria is not a passive actor in the fight against extremism. We are a resilient nation working toward inclusive governance and regional stability. Rather than being labeled a ‘country of particular concern,’ Nigeria should be recognized as a ‘country of strategic concern’—a partner deserving of robust support, intelligence cooperation, and military assistance.”

His remarks underscore the importance of reclaiming Nigeria’s global narrative and defending its sovereignty through respectful dialogue and proactive diplomacy. As international perceptions continue to evolve, Hon. Okolo’s call serves as a rallying point for a more confident and collaborative foreign policy approach—one that reflects Nigeria’s strength, leadership, and commitment to democratic values.
