The member representing Ideato North and South federal constituency of Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has cried out to the authorities over the state-of-erosion menace in the area, demanding the urgent rehabilitation of their roads to avoid the extinction of the communities in the area.

Ugochinyere also called on the Imo State government to step up efforts to arrest the rate of insecurity in the area, especially in Arondizuogu and its neighbouring communities, noting that for the last two weeks over 26 innocent people have been killed in cold blood by unidentified hoodlums.

Disclosing his worries yesterday during a briefing with journalists in Owerri, capital of Imo State, Ugochinyere expressed anger over the attitude of the state and local governments that decided not to bother about the welfare of the people, adding that the major constitutional responsibility of government is the protection of lives and property, as well as the welfare of the people.

He wondered why the two local governments of Ideato North and South that receive about N800 million monthly from the federation allocation account could not cater for the welfare of the people, insisting that such allocations are meant for the people and nothing more.

The lawmaker stated that his primary duty as an elected legislator is to make laws and carry out oversight functions, but regretted that both state and local governments have abandoned their responsibilities and left them for him to carry.

“I rehabilitate the schools, repair roads, and cater for the welfare of my constituents. Since the killing spree in the communities, I had initially disbursed N5 million to some victims but this is not enough. However, I have rallied round my friends across the country, as at yesterday (Thursday), they had contributed about N32 million and my target is N50 million which I believe they would make it up by the weekend so that we can take care of those people that lost their loved ones and other assistance to the people,” he said.

He urged the governments to support the local vigilante so that they can monitor the communities and assist the law enforcement agencies in their job.
