Heavy Metal Pioneer, Ozzy Osbourne, Dies at 76

Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary heavy metal singer known as the Prince of Darkness, has passed away at 76. His family confirmed his death on July 22, 2025, stating he was surrounded by love and family.

The statement reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary Prince of Darkness, at the age of 76. Surrounded by his loved ones, Ozzy left this world with the same dignity and resilience that defined his extraordinary life.

“We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of a man who left an indelible mark on music and the world. Ozzy’s legacy as a pioneering heavy metal artist and cultural icon will forever be remembered and celebrated. Thank you for being part of Ozzy’s journey. Rest in peace, Ozzy.”

Ozzy co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968 with Tony Iommi, Terry “Geezer” Butler, and Bill Ward, pioneering the heavy metal genre. After being kicked out of Black Sabbath, Ozzy launched a successful solo career with hits like “Blizzard of Ozz” and “Diary of a Madman.” The Osbourne family starred in the reality TV show “The Osbournes” from 2002 to 2005, showcasing their personal lives.

Ozzy Osbourne’s music legacy is immense, with a career spanning over five decades. As a pioneer of heavy metal, he left an indelible mark on the genre. 

Aside from co-founding the iconic band Black Sabbath, Ozzy was instrumental in shaping the sound of heavy metal with albums like “Paranoid” and “Master of Reality.” His solo career was marked by hits like “Crazy Train”, “Mr. Crowley,” and “Bark at the Moon,” showcasing his versatility and ability to adapt to changing musical landscapes.

Ozzy’s influence can be seen in many other artists, with bands like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Pantera citing him as an inspiration. His distinctive voice and stage presence have become synonymous with heavy metal, making him a beloved figure among fans worldwide.

Despite health issues in recent years, Ozzy’s music remains popular, with his legacy continuing to inspire new generations of metal fans and musicians.

Ozzy Osbourne’s impact on heavy metal and rock music is undeniable, cementing his place as one of the most iconic figures in the genre.

Ozzy had been battling Parkinson’s disease, which affected his mobility. He is survived by his wife Sharon Osbourne and five children: Aimee, Kelly, Jack, Louis, and Jessica.

Ozzy’s last performance was on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, England.
