Airtel Reinforces Collaboration with NCC to protect Subscribers

Airtel Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its subscribers and strengthening regulatory compliance following a sanction imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in relation to SIM registration breaches.

The company expressed appreciation to the NCC for uncovering the infractions, describing the development as a critical opportunity to strengthen internal processes and further align with national security and regulatory expectations. “We thank the NCC for its vigilance and continued support in protecting the integrity of the telecoms ecosystem. Airtel takes these findings seriously and is already implementing corrective measures,” a spokesperson for the company said.

The fine, linked to registration irregularities by some agents in Kano, is being treated with utmost urgency by the network provider. Airtel reiterated that it has always maintained close collaboration with the NCC and other regulatory bodies to ensure quality service delivery and customer safety.

As part of its proactive efforts to safeguard subscribers, the company launched the Airtel AI Spam Alert Service in March 2025. This first-of-its-kind tool leverages artificial intelligence to detect and alert customers in real time about suspected spam or fraudulent SMS messages. The service is completely free and available to all Airtel subscribers, whether on feature phones or smartphones.

Between March and May 31, 2025, the service flagged over 9.6 million spam messages, potentially saving millions of Nigerians from falling victim to scams. This initiative aligns with Airtel’s broader strategy to use technology to fight cyber fraud and maintain a trusted, secure communications environment for all.

Furthermore, Airtel Nigeria’s CEO recently announced that the company is doubling its investment in the country, focusing on network expansion, fiber-to-the-street rollout, 4G/5G deployment, customer care upgrades, and digital infrastructure security. These investments reinforce Airtel’s long-term vision of building a resilient and forward-looking telecom network that meets the evolving needs of Nigerians.

“Our systems are constantly evolving to stay ahead of scammers and malicious actors,” the spokesperson added. “This is not just about compliance; it’s about our responsibility to the millions of Nigerians who rely on Airtel daily.”

Airtel Nigeria says it will continue to work closely with the NCC and other arms of government to ensure high standards of service and safety for all telecom users nationwide.
