The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has charged stakeholders in the education sector to integrate tax education into school’s curricula and extracurricular activities to instill the principles of taxation, fiscal responsibility, and civic duty in the minds of Nigerian children.
Executive Chairman, FIRS, Zacch Adedeji while speaking in Abuja at the Public Presentation of Taxation Book for Nigerian children stated that tax education has been confined to boardrooms and policy circles making children to have little or no knowledge about the importance of tax benefits when they get to the helm of affairs, hence the urgent need for tax education.
Adedeji, represented by Associate Prof, Aisha Mahmood, explained that when children learn about taxation, they grow to be informed citizens who understand how taxes work and empowers them to demand accountability from the government.
He emphasised that adequate knowledge of tax payments would also make children grow to become responsible taxpayers who appreciate that taxes were not a burden, but a collective investment for our country, disclosing that over 10% of Nigerians pay taxes which was low compared to other African countries.
