Pure Souls Learning Foundation’s 7th annual Autism art exhibition

In celebration of Autism Awareness Month, the Pure Souls Learning Foundation hosted the seventh edition of its annual autism art exhibition with the theme, ‘My Whispering Voice’, at the TR Art Gallery in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The foundation uses the event to reaffirm its commitment to reshaping narratives and celebrating the extraordinary talents of individuals on the autism spectrum.

While speaking at the event, the founder and director of Patrick Speech and Languages Centre, Dotun Akande, noted that the exhibition aims to support parents who have children with special needs.

Speaking on the benefits of being a part of the exhibition, Akande said, “Not only do they exhibit their works, they have gone to places they never would have gone. We have had many exhibitions, and have taken the children’s works outside the country. We have seen tremendous improvement, even in the artwork of the children.”

The exhibition showcased a breathtaking collection of painting, sculptures, and mixed-media works by nine gifted artists, including Preye Azazi, whose vibrants abstracts explore emotion through colour; Funom Oti-Wenyang, a self-taught sculptor redefining texture and form; Christine Mike Nnaji’s artwork is deeply influenced by her personal experiences and interactions with the world, showcasing her commitment to raising awareness and fostering acceptance of neurodiversity. Chijindu Ijomah is a talented artist and athlete, while Daniel Ayomikun kolie creates diverse works, ranging from abstract pieces to animations, life painting, Odinaka Ozor, a young adult focuses on textile design. Anthony Imevbore often works from references, incorporating a unique technique into his acrylic painting and Awelewa Eniola, a young artist from Ekiti State whose work transcends physical limitation.

For many participants, the exhibition has been life changing. For Daniel Ayomikun Okolie, a 19-year-old artist diagnosed with nonverbal autism. Through the foundation’s mentorship program, Daniel discovered painting as his primary mode of communication. Daniels first art exhibition, DNX Creatoon, in collaboration with Pure Souls learning foundation in 2022, was a significant success that showcased his unique artistic talent and earned him an award for creativity and innovation. Daniel has had three successful exhibitions.

The foundation’s partnerships have catalyzed systemic change. In 2024, collaborations with Lagos State policymakers led to the adoption of autism-friendly guildelines in public schools, ensuring tailored support for neurodivergent students.
