The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday put finishing touches to the preparations for the nationwide ward congress of the ruling party with party chieftains engaged in full mobilisation of authentic party faithful.

At a well attended meeting of stakeholders from the 184 wards in Abia held at Umuahia, the party leaders vowed to use the ward congress to lay a solid foundation on which the party would take over power in 2023.

The seven-member Ward Congress Committee for Abia was received at the stakeholders meeting where they assured the party faithful that the congress would go ahead as scheduled.

Chairman of the ward congress committee, Rt. Hon. Sonny Goli, said that the team was in Abia to conduct a free, fair and transparent ward congress for authentic APC members.

“Tomorrow (Saturday), we are going on with our congresses nationwide,” he assured, adding that the ruling party was desirous of handing over to elected leadership from ward to national level.

Goli, who represents Brass/Nembe federal constituency in Bayelsa State, was accompanied by other members of the ward congress committee, including the secretary, Rt. Hon. Muktar Bajeh.

He further assured Abia APC faithful that results of the ward congress would be collated and announced at the various wards.

“We want a stronger APC in Abia that can take over power from PDP,” he said, urging all stakeholders to join hands to make this aspiration a reality.
In her remarks, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, urged party members to ensure that only committed loyal party members were elected at the congress.

Onyejeocha, who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency, said that APC as an opposition party in Abia should not give anything to chance in its quest to take over Abia Government House.
“So we must elect people of substance and integrity so that other political parties would not start harvesting from our party (due to weak leadership),” she said.

Stakeholders of Abia APC, including Engr. Alozie Mac-Solomon, vehemently condemned the purported suspension of Chief Ikechi Emenike by a faction of the party led by Hon. Donatus Nwankpa, describing it as laughable.
