Akwa Ibom State Government has condoled with families of the five deceased National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who died in a fatal motor accident. The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Sir Monday Uko, commiserated with the families of the deceased in a statement issued yesterday in Uyo.

Uko noted that the dead corps members passed away in an accident on the Abaji/Kwali expressway en route to Katsina State where they were posted for the mandatory NYSC orientation camp programme. An 18-seater bus conveying the prospective corps members from Uyo in Akwa Ibom State to Katsina State was reported to have run into a stationary trailer in the wee hours of July 28, which led to their deaths.

Others who sustained various decree of injuries in the accident were hospitalised at a nearby hospital. While describing the incident as a colossal loss, the commissioner noted with regret and despair that four of the deceased persons, comprising three males and one female, were proud indigenes of the state, who had distinguished themselves in character and learning in their academic pursuit.

“Having garnered the required knowledge and expertise in their respective areas of specialisation,” Uko observed that “this regrettable occurrence has deprived the state and country of the sterling contributions those heroic fallen youths would have brought to bear in our continuing efforts at nation building and development.

“It is also the prayer of the commissioner that God should grant them the needed fortitude to bear the immeasurable pain these irreplaceable losses must surely have caused them.”

Uko wished all those injured and traumatized by the gory incident a speedy recovery, and prays for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed corps members in God’s bosom.
