Elvis Orude: Crafting Confidence from the Heart of Nigeria

By Salami Adeyinka

Elvis Orude is becoming a name to watch in Nigeria’s modern fashion landscape. Growing up in the southern part of the country and surrounded by his grandmother’s fabric business instilled in Elvis an intuitive sense of fabric, textures, and colors that underlies every choice he makes.

“Everything I do begins with the fabric,” Orude said, reminiscing about his time spent in the market, “watching how fabric could become an artistic expression.”

As the founder of Elviva’s Kut, he designs clothing that seeks to empower the wearer, providing them with confidence and individuality. His clothing is informed by thought and not trends.

“I have an idea or a story before I even begin to design my clothing. That idea is what informs my choice of fabric and other processes,” he expressed.

Even at this stage, there is an awareness of the global audience that Orude is designing for. There is experimentation with designs that are universally appealing beyond the Nigerian context. The objective is obvious: putting Elviva’s Kut on the stage that represents depth and modernity.

What makes Elvis different from the others is his emphasis on meaningful design. While others are focused on the flash, there is less emphasis on the impact of the design on the person wearing the clothing.

“I want people to feel amazing when they put something on.”

Elvis is also concerned with the long-term sustainability of his work. From the selection of materials to the durability of his clothing, he thinks in terms of clothing that will last and have long-term value beyond the present fashion cycle. His approach is pragmatic and yet influenced by cultural narrative, and as such, he is a designer with vision and discipline.

Orude is at a point in his career where the foundations are being laid for a brand that will be associated with heritage, craftsmanship, and self-expression. Though Elviva’s Kut may be young, they are already showing the potential for a designer who will make his mark in the fashion industry at large.
