Bukola Omokehinde: Building Growdiance to Upskill Nigerian Talents During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In Nigeria, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many universities to close, leaving many students uncertain about their future. In the midst of this crisis, Growdiance organised the Student Advancement Initiative. The initiative aimed to provide career resources and training to students and empower them to succeed in their careers, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic.

The workshop received a whopping 250 applications and out of those, only 20 were selected to participate in the program. The chosen participants were trained on various career-building skills, including crafting winning CVs and cover letters, networking with professionals, building their LinkedIn profiles, and preparing for job interviews. The impact of the program was significant, with several participants attesting to its effectiveness in shaping their careers.

One participant expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to connect with seasoned professionals over the course of the workshop, saying, “The Student Advancement Initiative has indeed been a journey. The several challenges and tasks have sharpened my skills and I have come to adopt a global view in my career pursuit.” Another participant shared how the program helped them to update their knowledge and avoid common pitfalls in their job search, saying, “The idea of the Student Advancement Initiative is a platform that has drawn my attention to grey areas that should be avoided on résumé building and interview, and also establishing a long-term relationship within our network.”

The impact of the program has positioned Growdiance as a leader in the ed tech space and has set them apart as an organisation that is truly making a difference in the lives of young professionals. As one participant aptly put it, “It was a pleasure navigating the future with the Student Advancement Initiative, with some of the best students from various institutions in Nigeria, experienced and selfless trainers, and successful professionals from different industries and countries. Every session was insightful and great.”

As we navigate the uncertain times ahead, initiatives like Growdiance’s Student Advancement Initiative are more critical than ever. They provide a much-needed lifeline to young professionals, empowering them with the skills and resources they need to succeed in their careers. We commend Growdiance for their commitment to this important work and look forward to seeing the impact they will continue to make in the years to come.
