The Athletics School Games Berths in Lagos Saturday

The maiden edition of The Athletics School Games (TASG) will kickoff on Saturday, April 27, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Centre, Lagos.

Speaking at a press conference to herald the games at Safron Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, founder of The Athletics School Games, Dr. Seun Akinbohun, said the driving force behind the games was to give the burden talents across  Lagos State opportunity to express themselves.

“We are a country that is full of talents but there are not enough athletics competitions in Lagos State, hence the need to catch these burden talents at an early age informed the founding of TASG.

“Beyond competition amongst the participating schools, TASG would also be building discipline and uprightness amongst the pupils,” Akinbohun said.

Some of the events that the pupils would be participating in, include 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, 4 x100 and 4×400 relay races amongst many others.

Participants will include both primary and secondary school pupils from the ages of three.

For Keke Hammond, a founding member of TASG, the games would not be a one off event, as plans have been put in place at ensuring that TASG outlived its founders.

Lagos State Athletics Association will also be on hand to give the games the necessary technical support needed and also ensure the participants play by the rule.

One of the popular food drinks giants in the country, Maltina, is also on hand to support the games, and its brand manager, Clementina
Kayode, said one of the reasons Maltina is coming on board it to cash-in at the opportunity to catch burden talents at a very young age, so as to build future champions.
