Dessers Nominated for Rangers Goal of the Season

Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers has been nominated for Rangers’ Goal of the Season alongside former Newcastle right-back James Tavernier and two others.

The 29-year-old’s goal that was nominated for the award was his strike in Rangers’ 3-2 win over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League tie played at the Benito Villamarin last December.

In the 20th minute of the encounter, Jose Cifuentes passed to Dessers who skillfully got past his marker before unleashing the ball home to put Rangers ahead in the clash.

The Nigeria international’s strike is up against Tavernier’s goals against Ross County in a Scottish Premiership game early on in the season and his effort versus Aberdeen last December.

Also nominated for the award were Abdallah Sima’s goal against Heart of Midlothian on matchday 16 of the Scottish Premiership and Rabbi Matondo’s brilliant strike against Celtic in the Old Firm derby last weekend.

Despite Dessers resurgence under Philippe Clement, he couldn’t make the nomination list for the Player of the Season which will be contested by Tavernier, Sima, Jack Butland, John Lundstram and John Souttar.

The Belgian-born forward has 17 goals and eight assists in all competitions for the Light Blues this season.

Meanwhile, 2023 Flying Eagles invitee Thompson Ishaka is in the running for Rangers’ Academy Goal of the Season.

The exciting forward was shortlisted for his strike against OH Leuven first team in a Best v Best clash on July 22, 2023.

Ishaka has been nominated alongside Bailey Rice, Robbie Fraser, Ross McCausland and Josh Gentles.
