Taxation Body Gets New President, Pledges Professionalism

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has announced a new President, Mr. Innocent Chinyere Ohagwa to steer its affairs for the next two years. 

The institute said the latest development will enable it to deliver on its mandate more effectively, in promoting professionalism and regulate taxation practices in the country. 

In a statement by the institute’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Afolake Oso, Ohagwa, who was unanimously elected by the institute’s members of the Governing Council, would succeed the incumbent President, Mr. Samuel Olushola Agbeluyi, whose two-year tenure ends in June. 

The statement revealed further that Ohagwa boasts over 35 years of public sector tax administration, culminating in his role as Coordinating Director of Support Services at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). He brings robust expertise that aligns with the Institute’s mission to drive best practices in tax policy and administration.

He has been an active member of the Institute since his admission as an associate member in 1990. He currently serves as Vice President of the Institute and chairs its influential Finance and General Purposes Committee.At the African regional level, Ohagwa was re-elected as the Honorary Treasurer of the West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI) in February 2025, having previously served a two-year tenure from February 2023 to February 2025.

Since joining the Institute, he has played key roles in shaping governance and thought leadership, including being a facilitator at various times during the Institute organised Mandatory Professional Training Programme (MPTP), Workshops and Seminars.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), USA. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Lagos, Akoka and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Bayero University, Kano.
