The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) has expressed their commitment to stand in solidarity with the global community in advocating for the protection of press freedom and the fundamental right to freedom of expression.

A statement signed by Capoon, Sahara Deck (Abuja City Centre), Mr. Olamide Onil noted that despite Nigeria’s two decades of democratic governance, the nation continues to grapple with severe restrictions on press freedom and the harassment of individuals exercising their right to free speech. Citizens face arrest, intimidation, and detention for merely expressing their opinions, particularly on social media platforms.

He said the alarming trend of targeting journalists and individuals critical of the government is unacceptable in a democratic society. Journalists are frequently subjected to violence, harassment, and arbitrary arrests, hindering their ability to report objectively and hold power to account.

His words “ We bring attention to the plight of Mr. Mubarak Bala, who has been unjustly detained for over two years for expressing his views on social media. His case underscores the urgent need for the Nigerian government to uphold its commitment to human rights and ensure the fair treatment of all citizens.

“ Furthermore, the unresolved disappearance of Idris Abubakar, also known as Dadiyata, and the arbitrary detention of Steven Kefason highlight the pervasive climate of fear and repression faced by government critics in Nigeria.

“ The Sahara Deck calls upon the international community to pressure the Nigerian government to release all individuals unlawfully detained for exercising their right to free speech. We urge the government to respect press freedom and uphold the principles of democracy and human rights.

“ In our pursuit of justice, we have reached out to the National Human Rights Commission and the United Nations Human Rights Council, seeking their intervention on behalf of Mr. Mubarak Bala and others unjustly detained.

“ We remain committed to advocating for a free and vibrant press and will continue to stand against any form of oppression or censorship.” He said.
