EXPERT URGES GOVT. STAKEHOLDERS TO PRIORITIZE AI SAFETY FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Joshua Olonade, a distinguished technology expert, while acknowledging the effort of the government and relevant stakeholders in embracing artificial intelligence (AI) has made a pressing appeal for significant investment in AI safety measures, policies, and efforts. This strategic focus aims to ensure that the deployment of AI technologies contributes positively to national development while ensuring associated risks are put in check.

In a recent dialogue with the press, Olonade shifted the conversation towards the importance of developing AI safety frameworks alongside the drive for innovation in the sector. He commended the Nigerian government for its efforts in the adoption and promotion of AI technologies but stressed the urgent need to elevate the discourse to include AI safety.

“Whilst we acknowledge the efforts being put in on a national level to encourage adoption of AI technologies, it’s imperative to direct our collective focus towards establishing a robust framework for AI safety,” Olonade stated. “This will not only protect our societal fabric but also ensure that AI serves as a catalyst for sustainable development across all sectors without compromising on national security and the safety of the public.”

He underscored the transformative impact of AI on sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance, advocating for a balanced approach that considers both the benefits and the ethical implications of AI deployment.

Olonade called on the government through The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to spearhead efforts in formulating and implementing comprehensive AI safety policies. “To harness the full potential of AI for our nation’s progress, we must proactively address safety concerns through well-thought-out policies and measures. This includes investing in research, fostering public awareness about AI safety, and encouraging ethical considerations in the development of AI technologies,” he added.

Furthermore, Olonade emphasized the critical role of collaboration among the government, private sector, academia, and civil society in advancing AI safety initiatives. By pooling resources and expertise, Nigeria can navigate the complexities of AI, ensuring that technological advancements contribute to a secure, prosperous, and inclusive future for all citizens.

“Investing in AI safety is not just a precaution; it’s a strategic move towards sustainable national development. By prioritizing safety alongside innovation, Nigeria can lead by example in the responsible and ethical use of AI technologies,” Olonade concluded.

As a thought leader in the technology sector, with a clear call to action, Olonade’s insights offer a roadmap for policymakers, industry leaders, and technologists to integrate AI safety into their strategies and implementation, thus, aligning with global best practices positioning Nigeria as a forward-thinking nation committed to leveraging technology for the greater good.
