Minna Chief Magistrate Court Remands 53 Thugs in Correctional Centre

A Minna Chief Magistrate Court in Niger State has remanded 53 persons arrested for alleged thuggery in the state in the Correctional Centre in New Bussa, Borgu Local Government Area.

The suspects were arrested in Minna last week and charged to court last Wednesday.

The Chief Magistrate, Nasir Muazu, ordered that the suspects be remanded in the Correctional Centre till February 21, directing the prosecution to speedily investigate the case and send the case file to the Ministry of Justice for advice.

The suspects were arraigned on a 10 count charges, which include culpable homicide, robbery and procession of dangerous weapons.

Police Prosecution, Inspector Ahmed Saidu, had told the court that the suspects were arrested by a team of police detectives for their involvement in the gang war that took place in Minna last week during which a policeman and a businessman were killed.

He said the offences for which the suspects were charged were criminal in nature, and therefore, they cannot be tried by a Magistrate Court.

Saidu asked the court to adjourn the case to another date to enable the police to forward the case file to the state Ministry of Justice for legal advice.
