‘Most Newbies Don’t Believe They Can Survive Without Music Labels’ – Fizzy Obop

Ekemini Obop a.k.a Fizzy Obop is a digital music expert, professional digital marketing exec, A&R representative and business developer. Formally known as His Royal Majesty, Edidem Nyong Udo Obop (Paramount Ruler of Ikono LGA), he has worked with notable artists in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Jamaica and across the globe. Obop has headlined the likes of Alex Marley (cousin to Bob Marley, Jamaican) and fast rising Sierra Leonean artiste, Mb Salone.

In Ghana, he has as well worked with artists like Nero X, Bizzy Salifu, Amerado, Kwabena Kwabena and Queendarlyn Yurglee, Fiifi Adinkra (top Ghanaian blogger) and Biesloaded (Nigerian top blogger in Zanku Records). He has delivered projects for Oliver Nwagbo alias Pankeeroy, Sapphire Obi Ogodo, Anayo Kingsley Okeke and Akan Umoren a.k.a Sugarboygww. Having worked with over 200 artists worldwide in the last 12 months, he is currently working on a project with Amerado Burner and Kwabena Kwabena as well as WillisBeatz, Ghana’s top producer.

Speaking about the industry he said being a digital music executive entails overseeing online music sales, marketing and promotions.
On being in a tough industry such as the creative industry and managing to stay on top of things Obop said he stays creative, “I Think and strategize bringing up new services and strategies unused by other marketing companies afterwards I target other African countries asides Nigeria and get to work with their artists too. Hailing from a royal family hasn’t helped or hindered my chosen career in any way as this angle remains strictly political.”

For the OR expert he believes that the hardest thing about artistes production and representation has to be when an artist loses focus, in himself or career; things go sideways for the team lead, A&R or manager. Stating further he said, “After having worked with dozens of artistes over the years, the major misconception I would say newbies have about this industry is that most newbies don’t believe they can survive without labels; it takes only a good manager, A&R and PR team to pull the plugs. Having this people as a team doesn’t mean you are signed to them.”
