Brookfield Centre to Partner Experts on Lifestyle Medicine Awareness
Brookfield Centre for Lifestyle Medicine (BCLM), the first lifestyle medicine centre in Africa, is determined to partner experts and institutions to make lifestyle medicine a household name in Nigeria, through awareness, clinical practice, research and advocacy.
Its submission is in line with Global Lifestyle Medicine week 2021, a celebration of healthy behaviours and a public awareness campaign that showcases the impact lifestyle choices can have on chronic diseases.
Observed from May 30 to June 5, the campaign focuses on the six pillars of lifestyle medicine including nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, healthy relationships, avoidance of risky substances and a healthy environment.
Lifestyle medicine is the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic interventions including whole foods, plant predominant eating pattern, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connection as a primary modality, delivered by clinicians trained and certified in this specialty, to prevent, treat, and oftentimes reverse chronic diseases.
Monye described chronic diseases as conditions that last more than a year and need ongoing medical attention in addition to limiting activities of daily living.
She emphasised: “Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability worldwide.
“According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 80 per cent of heart diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes and 40 per cent of cancer are mainly caused by risky behavior which could be prevented primarily with modifications to diet and lifestyle.”
More than ever before, she continued, physicians and health professionals all around the world have come to accept that lifestyle medicine can truly be the foundation we need to redefine health, significantly improve outcomes and transform health care.
Meanwhile, the expert hinted that Brookfield Centre for Lifestyle Medicine is known as a leading provider of specialist integrated family health care to individuals and families.
As a multidisciplinary all-inclusive medical and wellness organisation, Monye said Brookfield works with clients to establish optimal health and wellbeing through appropriate, evidence-based, and well-timed lifestyle interventions.
