IG Threatens to Sanction Policemen Found Culpable in Clash with Navy

The Inspector General of Police (IG) Ibrahim Idris has warned that any policeman found culpable in last Tuesday’s clash between men of the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Navy will be sanctioned.

The IG issued the warning in Calabar, Cross River State, on Friday as he announced that the police authorities would conduct a private investigation on the incident, adding that no policeman should engage in any reprisal as a result of the clash.

Two policemen were officially confirmed dead, and three others injured as a result of the violent clash that also resulted in the burning of Akim Divisional Police Headquarters in Calabar.

Unofficial reports had it that the clash occured following a misunderstanding between a policeman and a naval rating close to the traffic light at IBB Way by the UJ. Esuene Stadium.

The misunderstanding had degenerated into the use of ammunition by the security men during the clash which lasted for hours.
