Asikhia Receives ZLP Certificate of Return, Unveils FCT Legislative Agenda
Professor Festus Uwakhemen Asikhia has received the Certificate of Return as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) senatorial candidate for the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 general election.
The presentation followed the party’s senatorial primary in Abuja, where delegates from the six Area Councils endorsed Asikhia as the party’s candidate.
Speaking after receiving the certificate, Asikhia said his campaign would focus on accessible representation, accountability, economic development and improved engagement with residents of the FCT.
He said his long years of residence and professional involvement in the territory had given him an understanding of some of the challenges facing residents and businesses.
“I have contributed to the growth and development of the Federal Capital Territory over the years. I understand the challenges faced by residents and businesses, and I believe the time has come to pursue meaningful legislative solutions that will improve lives and create opportunities for everyone,” he said.
Asikhia, an indigene of Edo State, is an academic and businessman. He said his professional experience in business, education and governance would inform his approach to legislative representation if elected.
A major component of his proposed agenda is improved engagement with constituents. He has proposed establishing liaison offices in the six Area Councils to facilitate communication between his office and residents.
He also plans to organise regular town hall meetings and community consultations across wards and Area Councils, saying legislation should reflect the concerns and priorities of constituents.
Another area of focus is taxation. Asikhia expressed concern about multiple taxes and levies affecting businesses and residents in the FCT.
He said he would seek legislative measures aimed at reducing duplication in tax administration and creating a more predictable environment for businesses and investors.
He also proposed reforms in land administration and property rights, including greater transparency in land allocation, revocation and development control.
According to him, residents whose properties are affected by government action should be entitled to due process and appropriate legal remedies.
Social welfare also features in his proposed legislative agenda, with emphasis on healthcare, support for vulnerable residents, youth development and measures aimed at improving economic opportunities.
Asikhia said his objective was to promote policies that would ensure that economic development translates into improved living conditions for residents.
The ZLP Chairman in the FCT, Hon. Swani Buba, described Asikhia as a credible candidate and said his emergence reflected the party’s intention to provide an alternative in the 2027 election.
Asikhia’s receipt of the Certificate of Return formally establishes him as the ZLP’s candidate for the FCT senatorial contest, subject to the applicable electoral processes.
The election is expected to feature competition among candidates from different political parties as preparations for the 2027 general election intensify.
