Onyeodime Atelier: Building a Luxury Fashion Brand Rooted in Nigerian Heritage
Ayo Ake
Luxury fashion is increasingly embracing authenticity, craftsmanship, and cultural storytelling. Onyeodime Atelier, founded by David Onyeodime, embodies all three principles through a design philosophy that transforms traditional Nigerian techniques into contemporary bespoke fashion.
Established in 2021, Onyeodime Atelier specialises in handcrafted menswear and womenswear distinguished by exceptional tailoring, artistic textile development, and meticulous attention to detail. Every collection reflects a commitment to preserving Nigerian heritage while responding to modern design sensibilities.
The atelier’s creative process begins with research into indigenous textile traditions. Techniques such as Adire hand-dyeing, Aso-Oke weaving, hand embroidery, beadwork, and traditional garment construction are thoughtfully incorporated into contemporary silhouettes that appeal to today’s luxury consumer.
David’s expertise was developed through years of intensive apprenticeship and artisan training rather than conventional classroom education. His studies under Michael Ogunbiyi equipped him with advanced tailoring techniques, pattern engineering, garment construction, and collection development. Simultaneously, his training at Nike Art Gallery provided technical mastery of Adire textile production, while his experience with the Aso-Oke Weaving Cooperative deepened his appreciation for indigenous weaving traditions.
These experiences have become the foundation of Onyeodime Atelier’s identity. Rather than replicating existing designs, the brand interprets traditional craftsmanship through innovative garment construction and modern luxury aesthetics.
The quality of David’s work has attracted industry recognition throughout his career. His inclusion in the ARISE Magazine Fashion Week Emerging Designer Showcase acknowledged his creative potential and introduced his collections to respected industry professionals. His Emerging Designer of the Year award at the City People Fashion Awards further recognised his growing influence within Nigerian fashion.
Beyond operating his own label, David has contributed to several respected fashion organisations. At GO Design Agency, he participated in ready-to-wear collection development, client fittings, alterations, and supplier coordination. Later, his work with Mowalola Ogunlesi Design exposed him to international creative processes, seasonal textile development, and youth-driven fashion research.
The combination of entrepreneurial leadership and collaborative industry experience has strengthened Onyeodime Atelier’s position as a brand capable of serving private clients while exploring broader creative opportunities.
As global consumers increasingly seek meaningful luxury experiences, Onyeodime Atelier demonstrates that handcrafted African fashion possesses both commercial relevance and international appeal. Every garment represents not only technical excellence but also the preservation of centuries-old cultural knowledge adapted for today’s world.
With continuous professional development, international academic exposure, and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, David Onyeodime is positioning Onyeodime Atelier as one of the emerging fashion brands contributing to Africa’s growing influence within global luxury fashion.
