Aisha Buhari Begins Construction of Computer Science Complex at Al-Qalam University

–         Says late Buhari’s life defined by duty, discipline, integrity, commitment to national development

The former First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has flagged-off the construction of a multi-billion-naira Computer Science Complex at the Al-Qalam University in Katsina State to advance education. 

Performing the ground breaking for the project Sunday evening, Aisha said she would use the proceeds of the 600-page book, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari”, to build the complex.

She said the computer science complex stands as a lasting testament to the enduring legacy of late Muhammadu Buhari whom she described as a patriot whose “life was defined by duty, discipline, integrity, and unwavering commitment to national development.”

The former first lady described the project as the beginning of a vision that invests in the minds of future generations and equips them with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

She added that technology has become the language of modern civilization and nations that invest in computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security, software engineering and digital innovation are shaping tomorrow.

She, however, noted the book, which was launched in December 2025, celebrates Buhari’s journey from military service to democratic leadership and reflected on his public service and legacy.

She said: “As we perform the groundbreaking today, let us remember that every great institution begins with a vision. Every great nation is built through education, and every lasting legacy is founded upon service to humanity.

“This is a powerful reminder that the greatest memorial we can build, not merely one concrete and still, but one that nurtures knowledge, character, and opportunity for generations yet unborn.”

Aisha, who said she was delivering her speech with mixed feelings, added that: “As a saying, dirty water doesn’t stop a plant from growing, so don’t let negative thoughts stop your progress. I am that type of woman.”

In his welcome remarks, the Vice-chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Prof. Nasiru Musa Yauri, said the computer science complex would bring unquantifiable educational benefits to the institution and its host community. 

He said the complex comprises two lecture halls of 156-capacity, a 200-seater auditorium, three computer laboratories equipped with 50 computers each, an office for 20 staff with furniture and computers and conveniences.

He explained the educational intervention would pave the way for the training of more young Nigerians across the country in computer science, information technology, cyber security and software engineering.

The vice-chancellor further said the computer science complex, when completed, would be named after former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In his remarks, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, represented by the state Deputy Governor, Hon. Faruk Lawal Jobe, commended the former Nigerian First Lady for boosting the state’s education sector.
