The maiden edition of the Victoria Island Carnival is set to hold from September 14 to 18 in Lagos. Organised by Downtown Promotions in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture under the theme “Eko’s Jewel: A Legacy Rich in Colour,” the event is curated to celebrate Victoria Island’s unique identity.
While Lagos Island is traditionally known for historic events like the Fanti Carnival, Victoria Island has evolved into the modern face of the city. The carnival is explicitly designed to celebrate VI’s unique position as the core heartbeat of Lagos’ economic, lifestyle, entertainment, hospitality, and business sectors.
The carnival also serves as a major building block in the state’s broader initiative to shape and elevate its tourism sector. By bringing together a vibrant mix of music, fashion, live art installations, and food experiences, organizers aim to build a lasting cultural legacy that positions Lagos as a premier international destination for creative and urban African culture.
A weeklong carnival, it is positioned as a world class experience that assembles music, fashion, arts, food, business, tourism, entertainment, and community engagement in a colourful celebration of one of Africa’s most iconic destinations.
Activities lined up for the carnival include the Carnival Village, the VI Street Party, the Grand Carnival Parade, live music performances, fashion showcases, food experiences, cultural exhibitions, art installations, community activations, and business networking events, all designed to showcase the diversity and dynamism of Lagos.
Speaking at the official launch, the organisers described the Victoria Island Carnival as more than an event, but a legacy project that seeks to connect people, celebrate culture, and position Lagos as a leading destination for global tourism and cultural exchange.
The carnival is expected to attract residents, tourists, corporate organizations, creatives,
hospitality brands, government stakeholders, and members of the international community,
creating significant opportunities for collaboration, investment, and economic impact.
Downtown Promotions, the organisers of the carnival, are renowned for delivering impactful cultural and entertainment experiences across Lagos, including the Most Beautiful Girl in Lagos, Africa Fashion Week Nigeria Summit, and Badagry to the World Concert.
Beyond the entertainment, the carnival is structured as an economic catalyst. With central hubs like the Carnival Village at Muri Okunola Park and a massive Street Party along Adeyemo Alakija Street, the event opens up significant commercial avenues. It provides local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), artisans, and corporate brands direct access to a high-density audience of residents, visitors, and international tourists.
The 2026 lineup places a heavy emphasis on contemporary youth culture. By introducing dedicated “creators’ hubs,” networking events, and lifestyle activations, the carnival aims to channel the energy of Nigeria’s digital and creative youth, giving them a physical stage to showcase their enterprise and talent.
