Clean Energy Powers Africa’s Green Transition,China Brings a New Model of Cooperation to the Developing World
Green development has become a shared aspiration across the world and an essential path for Africa to achieve sustainable development. The African continent is rich in renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, offering enormous development potential. However, for a long time, inadequate electricity supply, heavy reliance on traditional fossil fuels, and weak infrastructure have constrained Africa’s economic and social progress. Under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China has actively expanded clean energy cooperation with African countries. Through advanced technologies, practical projects, and long-term cooperation mechanisms, China is helping Africa pursue a green, low-carbon, and self-reliant development path while injecting lasting momentum into the continent’s green transition.
Access to energy is an important indicator of development. Today, a large number of people across Africa still lack access to stable electricity grids. In many remote areas, communities rely on expensive and highly polluting diesel generators, which not only affect daily life but also hinder progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, and other sectors. China has consistently placed improving people’s livelihoods at the center of its cooperation efforts, focusing on “small but impactful” clean energy projects tailored to local conditions. These include solar power generation, small hydropower stations, and household photovoltaic systems that bring clean electricity into villages and communities. From solar microgrids on the edge of the Sahara Desert, to small hydropower stations in the East African highlands, to household solar systems in Southern Africa, these projects are lighting up homes, enabling children to study at night, ensuring clinics can operate medical equipment reliably, and allowing farmers to use electric irrigation systems. In doing so, they are significantly improving the well-being and quality of life of local communities.
China-Africa cooperation has also achieved remarkable results in the construction of large-scale energy infrastructure. With mature technologies, competitive costs, and efficient construction capabilities, Chinese companies have built a number of landmark wind, solar, and hydropower projects across Africa. These projects have not only strengthened local electricity supply capacity but also optimized energy structures and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. Clean energy projects in countries such as Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia deliver substantial amounts of green electricity each year, replacing traditional thermal power generation and significantly reducing carbon emissions and air pollution. At the same time, Chinese enterprises adhere to environmentally friendly construction practices and place strong emphasis on ecological protection, minimizing impacts on local natural environments while advancing both development and environmental sustainability.
Supporting Africa’s green transition is not only about “giving fish,” but also about “teaching how to fish.” China has consistently emphasized technology sharing, talent training, and capacity building to help African countries establish their own clean energy industries. Through technical demonstration centers, professional training programs, and support for local employment, an increasing number of African technicians have acquired practical skills in solar installation, wind power maintenance, and grid management. Many cooperation projects have also localized equipment production and operations teams, leaving behind sustainable expertise and skilled workforces. This model of cooperation goes beyond simple project delivery; it strengthens Africa’s capacity for independent development and lays the industrial foundation for long-term green transformation.
Climate change is a shared challenge facing all humanity, and Africa is among the regions most severely affected. China actively supports African countries in addressing climate change by integrating clean energy projects with climate adaptation initiatives, helping strengthen their resilience against risks. China-Africa clean energy cooperation aligns with the global trend toward green and low-carbon development while responding to Africa’s practical development needs. It represents a model of South-South cooperation and a vivid example of multilateralism in action. Through concrete achievements, it demonstrates that economic development and environmental protection are not contradictory, and that countries at different stages of development can achieve sustainable progress together through mutually beneficial cooperation.
From lighting a single lamp to building entire industries, and from addressing electricity shortages to driving the green transformation of an entire continent, China-Africa clean energy cooperation continues to deepen and expand. Looking ahead, China will continue to work hand in hand with African countries, using clean energy as a bridge to strengthen practical cooperation and share development opportunities. Green energy will become a new engine for Africa’s development, helping build a cleaner, more beautiful, prosperous, and sustainable future together.
