Prominent opposition figures, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Senator Seriake Dickson and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, yesterday, converged on Kano State as the leader of Kwankwassiya movement Rabiu Kwankwaso’s faction prepares for a major political realighment
The gathering was aimed at solidifying alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, as the political figures paid a special Sallah visit to Kwankwaso and his supporters at his Kano residence yesterday.
The meeting saw top opposition leaders discussing strategies with Kwankwaso’s supporters as Obi addressed thousands of Kwankwasiyya supporters, promising to wrest power in 2027.
The event marked a significant push for coalition-building among opposition groups, with Kwankwaso said to be set to join the ADC as part of the move to strengthen their hand in the upcoming elections.
Obi explained that the visit was to felicitate Kwankwaso and honour him and his supporters during the festive period.
“I’m here to felicitate you on the occasion of the Sallah and to pay my respects to our leader,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor assured residents of Kano that all their efforts would be put in place to revive the state’s economic base, particularly its industrial sector.
He said plans were underway to restore the productivity of key industrial hubs in the state, including Bompai and the Sharada industrial hubs, as well as revive notable institutions such as the defunct Bank of the North.
“We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano. What we want to do is to make sure that we bring back the powers of Kano and restore its industries,” he added.
The ADC chieftain stressed that the visit was not politically motivated but intended to celebrate the Sallah festival with the good people of the state.
“Today is not about politics, it is about celebrating Sallah. May Almighty Allah bless all of you,” Obi said.
However, the Chairman of the Kwankwaso-Obi Support Group, Abba Sadauki Gwale, said that only Kwankwaso-Obi joint ticket would salvage the country from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)
“If the duo gets a chance in the upcoming election, Nigeria will be a better place, for real. We’re tired of insecurity, hunger, and starvation.
“We want a political alliance to bring together Obi’s strong support base in the south and Kwankwaso’s formidable support in the north, creating a powerful coalition that could potentially shake up the political landscape. With this partnership, the duo is poised to give the ruling party a run for their money,” Sadauki stated.
