Abdulkabir Aliu’s Philanthropy Warms Muslim Community
For many Muslim families, Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and giving. This year, for several communities across Nigeria, it has also come with practical support.
Abdulkabir Aliu, founder and Group CEO of Matrix Energy Group, has long been associated with quiet philanthropy. An engineer by training, he built Matrix Energy into a major player in oil trading, logistics and LPG distribution. He also serves on the Presidential Economic Coordination Council under President Bola Tinubu.
But beyond business, Aliu is known for consistent charitable work, especially during Ramadan.
In previous years, he distributed Zakat and hundreds of bags of rice in communities such as Ikare Akoko. He has also financed Ramadan feeding programs for Muslim Students’ Societies in institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. Trucks loaded with rice, beans, sugar and milk reportedly arrive at campus mosques to support students observing the fast.
This year’s Ramadan, however, stands out for its scale and timing. Alongside food items, cash gifts have been distributed to ease pressure on families facing rising living costs. According to reports, beneficiaries include students, mosque communities and vulnerable households.
Aliu’s giving also extends beyond food. Through his foundation, he funds scholarships for indigent students and supports healthcare projects, including kidney treatment complexes in Maiduguri and at OAU. He has sponsored mosque construction and regularly assists extended family members and local communities during the fasting period.
Much of this support is done quietly, in line with Islamic teachings that encourage discreet charity.
For many recipients, the impact is simple: fewer worries about meals at sunset and some financial breathing space during a spiritually important month.
In a period when economic pressures remain high, such gestures, whether large or small, often carry deeper meaning for those who receive them.
