National Forum of Former Legislators, has declared its support for the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, as its preferred candidate for the governorship of Kano State.
Also, the group, has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 general election, citing the need for continuity to consolidate ongoing reforms and development programmes.
The endorsement, according to Barau’s Media Aide Ismail Mudashir, was announced during a courtesy visit by members of the forum to Senator Barau at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the statement added: the National Coordinator, Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, said the decision followed wide consultations among former lawmakers across federal, state and local government levels.
Igbokwe explained that the forum resolved to back President Tinubu to enable him complete what it described as “far-reaching reforms and developmental programmes” initiated by the administration in the last 30 months.
According to him, former legislators across the country had agreed to align with the current administration as a structured parliamentary support group, driven by shared belief in the president’s economic and governance agenda.
“We have come together as right-minded individuals who believe in this administration and have already established our position as a parliamentary support group for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Igbokwe said.
He added that the forum’s Kano State chapter has also unanimously endorsed Senator Barau for the governorship race, describing him as a tested lawmaker with the capacity to provide effective leadership in the state.
“We have also concurred with our state chapter, which has endorsed Senator Barau for the governorship of Kano State,” he said.
Responding, Barau commended the forum for its evolution from an informal association into a formal body of former parliamentarians, describing the initiative as timely and strategic.
He noted that the involvement of experienced former legislators in national affairs would strengthen governance and policy implementation.
“This initiative is timely and necessary. What you’ve done is remarkable and worthy of support,” Barau said.
