BENUE TAKES CENTER STAGE AS ORSEER IKYAATOR FOUNDATION HOSTS HISTORIC TENNIS RANKING TOURNAMENT
Benue State has taken a major step onto the national sports stage following the conclusion of the Dr. Joseph Ikyaator National Tennis Open in Makurdi. The tournament, organised by the Orseer Ikyaator Foundation, is the first nationally ranked tennis competition ever held in the state.
Over the course of one week, 80 elite players competed for national ranking points and prize money, while 47 juniors took part in development-focused events. The tournament drew athletes, coaches, and officials from across Nigeria, creating what organisers described as a transformational sports week for the state.
The men’s singles title was claimed by Canice Abua, with Mohammed Musa finishing runner-up. In women’s singles, top-ranked Mohammed Khadijat emerged champion, continuing her strong run in Nigerian tennis. Khadijat also won the women’s doubles event with Mooffa Mary.
The junior categories showcased promising talents, including winners Adamu Onoja, Winifred Tersoo, Ivana Abu, Goodluck Tersoo, David Aper, and Mary Onoja.
Orseer Ikyaator, founder of the Orseer Ikyaator Foundation, said the tournament had opened Benue to national tennis competition and created lasting opportunities for young athletes. He described the event as both a celebration of excellence and a platform for future champions.
With ₦10 million in prize money and ₦5 million dedicated to junior scholarships, the tournament has set a new benchmark for tennis competitions in Nigeria.
