For over three decades, Dr. Hope Okwa has not only excelled as a drilling consultant but has also contributed significantly to research and knowledge advancement in engineering management and drilling technology.
Dr. Okwa’s academic journey spans several prestigious institutions. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin, followed by master’s degrees in Petroleum Engineering (Heriot-Watt University) and Innovation & Entrepreneurship (HEC Paris). He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from The George Washington University and has completed his doctorate in Engineering/Industrial Management.
His research focuses on cost optimization, performance improvement, and project management in drilling operations—a critical area for an industry that demands high efficiency under challenging economic and environmental conditions.
Professionally, Dr. Okwa has accumulated a wealth of experience with international oil companies like Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Chevron, as well as Nigerian operators including Addax Petroleum, Amni Petroleum, First E&P, Seplat, Elcrest, Newcross, Monipulo, Aradel, Waltersmith, Excel E&P. Through his consultancy, HD Okwa Drilling Services Ltd, and his role as co-founder of H-PTP Energy Services, he has successfully applied research-driven methodologies to achieve 40–60% cost savings in well delivery.
Additionally, Dr. Okwa completed a five-year mentored training program at Shell, earning Shell Drilling Courses Round 1 and Round 2 Certifications.
He also serves as a volunteer mentor with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (Canada) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International, where he holds the record for the highest number of professional mentees globally.
As a registered engineer in Canada (P.Eng) and a life member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Dr. Okwa bridges the gap between industry practice and academic research, using his findings to inform strategies that enhance drilling performance and project management efficiency.
His contributions highlight the vital role of continuous research and education in advancing oil and gas operations—ensuring that innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions remain at the forefront of the industry.
