Lagos Shines Bright: Alaba Rago Market Fencing Project Signals Economic Boom Under Sanwo-Olu’s Vision
Lagos, August 1, 2025 – A major step toward urban renewal and economic empowerment is underway at Alaba Rago Market as the Lagos State Government, in partnership with Equity Circle, advances a critical fencing project aimed at improving security, structure, and trade efficiency.
The initiative, a cornerstone of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s economic development strategy, reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more organized and secure environment for thousands of traders who rely on the market for their livelihoods.
Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser on EGIS and Urban Planning, has played a central role in coordinating the project to align with Lagos’ broader urban planning goals.
“The Alaba Rago fencing project is a critical step toward modernizing our markets and empowering traders with a secure, efficient trading environment”, he said
His leadership has ensured seamless collaboration between Equity Circle and relevant state agencies, maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and sustainability.
John Igbinosa, CEO of Equity Circle, confirmed that the project has reached key milestones and is progressing on schedule, saying “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, with the strategic leadership of Mr. Babatunde, has provided unwavering support. Their commitment has given us the tools to execute this project efficiently.”
Beyond its structural purpose, the fencing is designed to bring long-term order to the market, improve access control, and create a more business-friendly atmosphere for traders and customers alike.
A respected traditional authority, Oba Sulaimon Raji Adesina (Ashade I), the Oniba Ekun of Iba Kingdom, has also contributed significantly to the project’s success. His involvement has helped unify the community and government toward a shared goal.
“The king’s support has bridged the gap between the community and the government, making this a truly collaborative effort, “ said Igbinosa
The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has indicated that the fencing is only the beginning. Future infrastructure plans include enhanced drainage, lighting, and waste management systems, further boosting the market’s functionality and economic potential.
Lajawa, Chairman of Alaba Rago Market, expressed gratitude on behalf of the traders:
“This fence is more than just a structure; it’s a symbol of hope for our businesses.”
As the project continues to take shape, Alaba Rago is being positioned as a model for market modernization—not just in Lagos, but across Nigeria. It showcases how public-private partnerships, traditional leadership, and strategic governance can come together to spark inclusive growth and sustainable urban development.
