Blessing C. Jones: The Contract Strategy Behind Global Business Expansion
By Tosin Clegg
As more companies pursue international expansion, cross-border partnerships have become a central strategy for growth. Businesses increasingly collaborate with foreign distributors, manufacturers, and franchise partners to reach new markets and strengthen supply chains. While these partnerships create opportunities, they also introduce legal complexities that many businesses underestimate.
International agreements involve more than a handshake or a standard contract template. Trade regulations, intellectual property protections, jurisdictional differences, and dispute resolution mechanisms all shape the outcome of cross-border collaborations. Without carefully structured agreements, businesses can face financial risk or legal disputes that threaten long-term partnerships.
For Trade and Business Law practitioner Blessing C. Jones, contract strategy is a critical tool for protecting businesses operating across borders. With professional experience spanning Nigeria and the United States, Jones helps businesses draft clear agreements, manage intellectual property rights, and navigate regulatory obligations in international trade relationships. Global business expansion requires more than market opportunities and investment capital—it depends heavily on well-structured contracts that clearly define the rights, responsibilities, and expectations of all parties involved. This is to ensure that all parties involved feel protected. As businesses increasingly operate across borders, contractual agreements have become essential tools for managing risk, ensuring regulatory compliance, and creating stable partnerships. Blessing C. Jones has built her work around helping businesses understand how strategic contract management can support sustainable international growth.
Her expertise is supported by a strong academic foundation. She earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Ebonyi State University, graduating with Second Class Honors. Her academic prowess was further solidified when she attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2018. These experiences provided Jones with the foundational training in Company Law and Intellectual Property, setting her on a clear path toward Business and Trade compliance, an area that would eventually become her professional passion.
With extensive experience in trade and business law, Blessing advises startups and small businesses on how to develop contracts that protect their interests while enabling them to operate confidently in global markets. Her approach focuses on structuring agreements that address critical elements such as dispute resolution mechanisms, regulatory compliance, intellectual property protection, and cross-border payment terms. By integrating these legal safeguards into commercial agreements, businesses can avoid costly misunderstandings and protect themselves from potential regulatory and financial risks while supporting sustainable growth. Her experience enables her to guide organizations through the complexities of negotiating partnerships across different legal systems.
Professionally, Jones served as an Associate at The Channings Law Firm, where she supported commercial banks, oil & gas and manufacturing companies by providing legal, regulatory, and strategic guidance that facilitates compliant and profitable trade and preparation of documentation for complex transactions. It was here that Jones’ passion for international trade began to take shape. As a social responsibility, Jones began to consult for small-scale businesses because she believed many businesses had the potential to compete on a global scale. As her career progressed, so did her passion for international trade. Blessing joined Tokunbo Olugbenga & Co. as Corporate Counsel. She was responsible for managing the entire contract lifecycle including negotiating and drafting commercial contracts, business proposals and researching and advising on cross-border trade deals as well as intellectual property protections and financial documentation for complex transactions.
The stakes in these contracts can be high. Poorly drafted contracts often lead to disagreements over intellectual property ownership, payment structures, or distribution rights. In some cases, businesses lose control of valuable assets simply because legal protections were not clearly defined at the outset. In the Fall of 2022, Jones got an opportunity to work in the legal team of one of the foremost commercial banks in Nigeria overseeing financial transactions and eliminating fraudulent risks for the bank’s customers. Instead, Jones secured a partial scholarship at the American University Washington College of Law to study International Business and Trade Law. She says she decided to focus on what is more important. “I was looking at the bigger picture, bigger than the one right in front of me. I knew there was a gap in our Industry, in African markets. I knew we couldn’t compete on a global scale with our contemporaries. It is my desire to bridge that gap.” she says. Blessing intends to focus on learning and researching about trade policies and regulations and understanding how African businesses can ensure compliance.
Jones’ contract strategy is particularly valuable for businesses engaging in trade between emerging markets and developed economies. Companies entering international partnerships must navigate different legal systems, trade policies, and compliance obligations governed by global institutions such as the World Trade Organization. Through careful drafting and negotiation of contracts, Blessing helps businesses align their transactions with international trade rules while maintaining flexibility for future expansion.
Another challenge involves jurisdiction. When disputes arise between partners in different countries, determining where and how conflicts should be resolved can become complicated. Companies that fail to address these questions in their contracts may face lengthy and costly legal battles. The advent of alternative dispute resolution is fast replacing the widely known traditional courtroom system. This gives parties the freedom to choose any method of alternative dispute resolution that they see fit.
Clear contractual frameworks provide protection and clarity. Agreements that define obligations, dispute resolution mechanisms, and intellectual property ownership create a stronger foundation for international cooperation. “I believe contracts are not merely legal documents but are strategic instruments that can support business growth. Therefore, to strategize your business for global expansion, you must get your contracts right.” Jones says.
“Businesses entering international partnerships need contracts that reflect the realities of cross-border trade,” Jones explains. “A well-structured agreement protects both parties and provides a roadmap for how the partnership will function.” Her work also ensures agreements comply with relevant trade laws and regulatory requirements, that drive long-term global expansion.
As global commerce expands, well-drafted international contracts are increasingly essential. Practitioners like Blessing C. Jones help businesses build partnerships that are profitable, sustainable, and legally protected.
